Information Literacy: Search Strategies, Tools & Resources for High School Students
by Zorana Ercegovac

Linworth Publishing

2001

Send your students off to college with the information skills they need to succeed!

  • This book takes a student-centered perspective.
  • Draws on learning theories, research on information-seeking for young people, and AASL's position on information literacy.
  • Offers a tested program, not just guidance in developing one.
  • Curriculum-integrated, project-based, and class-tested, this flexible resource helps assure your high school students are competent learners and researchers! The approach considers five types of learning: content understanding, problem-solving, metacognition, collaboration, and communication.
  • The "you" in the book refers to students learning information literacy in the context of content area studies. Annotated bibliography and some other sections are directed to library media specialists (LMS) and teachers. Students will learn to plan their research, organize for searching, find a variety of resources, think critically about resources, and give credit to the works referenced.
  • Comprehensive chapters are interrelated yet independent and adaptable to your use. In addition to comprehensive conceptual guidance, there are four "Think Guides" for supporting student information skills: topic narrowing examples, search strategy techniques, finding search words, and evaluation of Web sources.
  • This book can also be used as an introductory text for bibliographic instruction courses and to orient first year library students to the basics of information access, organization, and basic resources.
  • Here are the REVIEWS.

Information Literacy: Search strategies, Tools & Resources (ST&R) for College Students, 1st ed.
by Zorana Ercegovac, Ph. D.
Los Angeles: InfoEN Associates, 1999.

The ST&R program consists of the following three learning components:

ST&R Workbook (ISBN 0-9644342-6-1)
ST&R Show (ISBN 0-9644342-7-X)
ST&R WebLinks (ISBN 0-9644342-9-6)

DESCRIPTION

Information Literacy: Search strategies, Tools & Resources (ST&R) is classroom- tested, research-based, comprehensive, and flexible tool for information literacy instruction (ILI) program. Nine modules range from basic information access concepts and search strategies to learning how to effectively search, evaluate and cite Web documents, digital libraries, factual and bibliographic sources.

In addition to ST&R textbook, we have developed two companion software programs which can be used in a traditional classroom or lab settings or in distance independent learning environments. ST&R Show is developed using Microsoft® PowerPoint 97 presentation program (viewer included); it features hyperlinks that automatically connect youto the selected Internet digital libraries. ST&R WebLinks program contains over 100 annotated links to the selected and interdisciplinary Web documents.

The ST&R program IS a unique and comprehensive information literacy program for the following reasons:

1.ST&R gives equal importance to each of the information sources -- INTERNET sources are as important as encyclopedias, maps and atlases or online library catalogs.

2.ST&R program is driven by users' information needs rather than sources.

3.ST&R is being used and tested in the classroom environment with college students over the period of 8 years.

4.ST&R draws on years of experience and empirical studies.

5.ST&R is based on the principles: THE USER, ACTIVE LEARNING, CONCEPTUAL MODEL OF TEACHING, and MODULARITY. It supports content understanding, problem-solving, and collaboration. For details, see Selected Publications, under College & Research Libraries (1995) at: http://www.cs.ucla.edu/Leap/zer

ST&R is developed specifically for teachers and instructional librarians in colleges and community / learning centers. The program is also suited for anyone interested in self-paced learning in the use of information technologies and resources.
