Objectives, Assessment: This course is designed to
introduce students to our cultural heritage through the
study of music in its historical contexts, cultural values
that produced it, and social functions. Students will listen
to a variety of musical genres, styles, and media,
interpret, discuss, and analyze music pieces, and reflect on
the interdisciplinary nature that combines the arts,
literature, social and political events. Students will be
working (in small groups, depending on a size of the class)
with variety of printed and digital resources. Assigned
projects will engage students to actively explore music in
diverse cultures. Specific topics will be handed
out in class along with descriptions of projects with
assigned due dates. Handouts will be provided in our
classes. Optional and tentative: field
trips may be arranged throughout the course; examples
include visiting a live concert performance, or a visiting
ethnomusicology archive at UCLA's Schoenberg
Hall. At the completion of this
course, students will become familiar with music elements
including sound (pitch, dynamics, color), instruments,
rhythm, melody, musical key, and texture. Various pieces of
music are chosen to illustrate different genres and styles.
Students should be able to analyze important musical
stylistic periods and the related historical and cultural
characteristics. They should be able to place composers,
landmark pieces, and genres in an historical time frame.
Students will read assigned
materials, participate in class discussions based on the
assigned readings, use a variety of technologies, and
complete projects.
