SCHEDULE for the Research Paper Process--Spring 2004:

Welcome 11th grade American History students

This page will start you off on our seven week long journey to "academic research process" that will take us to College Library at UCLA on March 19th. We will have three classes before the college library trip (March 2nd, 9th, and 16th) as well as three classes after the research field trip (March 23rd, and after the spring break, on April 13th, 20th, and 27th).

The main purpose of this new project at Windward is to introduce you to working actively on your research paper in the way scholars do. Will explain what this means in class.

Each time we meet, we will explore an important topic that will help you write the assigned paper effectively and expertly. Some of these topics include the following skills:

1. To define your topic (narrowing down and making it possible to successfully and timely complete your project)

You might want to read writing procedure as well as a writing guide beforehand

We will start with searching our own collection, then go to UCLA/USC vast documents:

2. To find books on your topic, search the Orion UCLA's library catalog; you may want to read its help guide; those of your who will go to USC, visit their library catalog, HOMER.

3. Now, look at some of the entries that describe books on your topic; will learn how to do that.

4. Next you will learn how to use the Library of Congress Classification scheme to find books in stacks.

Find number of libraries at UCLA using this MAP

Look at the map of the Powell Library GROUND FLOOR
Explore the Powell Library FIRST FLOOR

5. We will together visit these areas during our research time at Powell, at the moment, virtually walk through these areas and familiarize yourself with places, names, and special collections and services that we will all visit there and then.

6. In addition to books, please visit our primary sources that you will find on our title web site page. Please explore those as we will be digging deep into some of these documents. Actually, physically, they are all sitting in large libraries, museums, and archival repositories. More later.

For convenience, here are some of the pages for you to explore:

Archives of African American Music and Culture
Documenting the South
Library of Congress Thomas
Center for Black Music Research

7. Another area of resources that you will be exposed to are periodical indexes, both locally and at UCLA; to get you started, look at the AMERICA: HISTORY and LIFE and Expanded Academic ASAP.

8. ... a short pretest to follow :-)

9. ANNOUNCEMENTS IN CLASS

10. You should have computer IDs and passwords, WORKSHEETS, energy, attention, and questions!
